B2B Marketplace Development: How We Built Platia, Mexico's #1 Circular Commerce Platform

Platia is a Mexico-focused B2B circular marketplace for home, events, hotels, and restaurants. Businesses generate surplus inventory — furniture, decor, equipment, stock that never sold. Without a way to reuse or resell it, that inventory went to waste. The founders wanted a marketplace where businesses could recover value from surplus and direct proceeds to social causes.

The Problem

The circular economy sounded good in theory, but nobody had built a marketplace that made business buyers trust the model. Existing platforms were consumer-focused, and the founders' early attempts at building the UX couldn't explain circular inventory in a way that felt credible to hospitality and events buyers. They needed a marketplace where buyers and sellers could transact, with browsing across home, events, hotels, and restaurants, and proof that purchases create social impact. Without that proof, the marketplace would stall.

What We Built

We rebuilt the marketplace around trust. Businesses list inventory on their own. No engineering support. Buyers browse by category and find what they need. Every purchase shows the donation total so buyers know where it goes. The system handles everything from a single chair to bulk surplus stock.

Technical Architecture

React 18 + TypeScript frontend with TanStack Router and Query. Node.js/Express API layer. PostgreSQL with JSONB for flexible product catalog schemas across 4 verticals. Elasticsearch for multi-category product discovery. Redis for session management and real-time inventory sync. Docker deployment on VPS with automated backups.

Key Technical Decisions

--

JSONB schemas for 4 vertical product types

--

Elasticsearch over PostgreSQL full-text search for catalog performance

--

Materialized views for impact dashboard (load time 2.3s to 200ms)

--

Self-service onboarding pipeline to eliminate manual seller setup

--

Event sourcing for transaction audit trail

Before & After

Before

Manual cataloging, no search, generic marketplace UX, 2.3s dashboard loads

After

Self-service onboarding, Elasticsearch-powered discovery, 4-vertical category system, 200ms dashboard loads

Deliverables

Two-sided B2B marketplace
Seller storefronts and onboarding
Multi-category product discovery
Impact donation tracking
Inventory publishing flows

The Results

Platia is now the top B2B circular marketplace in Mexico. The platform hosts 2,000+ published products from 350+ active sellers across four verticals: home, events, hotels, and restaurants. Over $500,000 has been donated to social causes through platform transactions. Businesses that used to write off surplus inventory now recover value and fund social causes. Skeptical buyers came back.

"We used to throw away surplus inventory. Now it funds social causes and brings in revenue. We didn't expect that."

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to build a B2B marketplace platform?+

A production-ready B2B marketplace typically takes 3-4 months to build, depending on complexity. Platia launched with 4 verticals, self-service seller onboarding, Elasticsearch-powered search, and donation tracking in that timeframe. An MVP with fewer features can ship in 6-8 weeks.

What tech stack is best for a two-sided marketplace?+

For B2B marketplaces, we recommend React with TypeScript for the frontend, Node.js or Python for the API, PostgreSQL with JSONB for flexible product catalogs, and Elasticsearch or Meilisearch for product discovery. Redis handles session management and caching. This stack balances developer productivity, query performance, and operational simplicity.

How do you handle trust and verification in a B2B marketplace?+

Trust is the product in B2B marketplaces. We build staged onboarding pipelines with manual verification steps, seller trust scores based on transaction history and response times, condition grading systems for product quality, and dispute resolution flows. Automating verification too early degrades buyer confidence.

What is circular marketplace software and how is it different from regular marketplaces?+

Circular marketplace software tracks the full lifecycle of products being reused, donated, or resold rather than discarded. Unlike standard e-commerce platforms, circular marketplaces include impact tracking (donation amounts, social outcomes), condition grading, and multi-stakeholder flows involving buyers, sellers, and nonprofits. Platia donates a percentage of every transaction to verified social causes.
